Explorer Canoe Trip- Ages 13-15

Explorer Canoe Trip: Sunday August 13 - Friday August 25, 2017

This 9 day canoe trip in the rugged North Country of Ontario is designed for young adventurists, future leadreship participants, and Youth Campers who want a taste of something a bit different. The Exploere Program allows participants to develop their backcountry skills and expand their knowledge of canoe tripping. Exploeres have the opportunity to experirence some of Northern Ontario's most pristine land scapes while being supported in a tight knit, small-group environment.

The group spends the first two days at John Island, learning safety and paddling skills from their qualified leaders. Campers are not required to have any prior experience. Explorers will also have the opportunity to participate in some all-camp actvities and traditional camp program areas such as high ropes or waterfront activities.

On trip, the Explorers will find themselves immersed in one of the many breathtaking routes that Northern Ontario has to offer. Leaders will guide them to develop basic skills in navigation, backcountry cooking, site management, paddling, and portaging. Travelling 15-20km per day gives the group plenty of time to explore their surroundings and enjoy each other's company. Days often finish sitting around the campfire, looking up at the starry August sky.

Participants will find themselves amazed by what they can do, especially with the support of their new friends! Explorer Canoe Trippers develop self-confidence and learn how to encourage others to do the same.

The Beauty of Northern Ontario...

John Island is located in the midst of one of Canada's finest regions of wilderness travel. Situated in the Thousand Islands of the North Channel of Lake Huron, John Island has easy access to the waters of Lake Huron and Lake Superior.  Our proximity to Ontario’s extensive parks system opens the waters of Killarney, Temagami, the Missinaibi, and so many more!

Each year, John Island staff choose a route for the Explorer Trip that is appropriate for all experience levels, and allow participants to discover the incredible wilderness of Northern Ontario.  Past groups have travelled Temagami, the stunning Wolf Lake region, and smaller, less travelled lake systems Northwest of Elliot Lake.

Intricate river systems including the Missinaibi, French, and Spanish are  such as the Albany and Missinaibi are nearby and travel north to the remote shores of James Bay. Our Specialty Programs make use of Ontario's extensive parks systems including the North Channel, Killarney, Temagami and others!
